PlanNYC, a student-run website based at NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, has proudly served New Yorkers for five years. During that time, the growth of online information on land use and development issues, along with advances in technology such as RSS feeds and news alerts, have created many opportunities for New Yorkers to stay informed about housing and land use debates in the City. As a result, the daily news updating on this site has become less unique and less critical to our users.
We are pleased to keep the existing PlanNYC content online as a resource; all content on the site is current of July 6, 2010, but will not be updated after that date.
We hope you continue to use the data and research available at the Furman Center (which you can find at www.furmancenter.org), and we welcome your ideas and suggestions for how we can continue to provide objective information and analysis about land use and housing policy debates in New York City.

In 2008, plans for a second station on the No. 7 extension, at 41st Street and 10th Avenue, were cut due to funding shortfalls. Now, the Real Estate Board of New York (RENBY) is encouraging the Bloomberg Administration to reconsider a second station at the site.
No. 7 Expansion Exceeding Pre-set Budget

The engineering firm McKissack + Delcan released a report stating that construction for the No. 7 train line extension is surpassing its $2.1 billion budget. The size of the deficit has not been revealed and the city does not yet have a measure in place to address cost overruns.

Residents and developers on Manhattan’s West Side are pushing to reverse a decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to not build a subway station for the No. 7 line at 10th Avenue and 41th Street.

The Real Estate Board of New York (RENBY) has come out in support of another stop at West 41st Street and 10th Avenue as part of the Number 7 train line expansion. RENBY Chairwoman and CEO, Mary Ann Tighe, applauded the City for raising $2 billion to expand the line.
Petitioning For One More Stop On the 7-Line

Requests for a stop at 41st Street and 10th Avenue are being revived after two years. The Real Estate Board of New York, with help from Senator Charles Schumer (NY-D), is lobbying the Obama administration for funds for the second stop. Despite this, work on the line continues as planned without accounting for the requested stop.
Funds Requested For the No. 7 Subway Extension

The Real Estate Board of New York is petitioning the federal government for stimulus funds for the Number 7 subway line extension. The project will create a subway stop at 11th Avenue and W. 34th Street and will open in three years. The Real Estate Board is also asking for an additional stop at W. 41st Street and 10th Avenue.
First Phase of 7 Train is Completed

The first phase of the 7 subway train extension project is complete. This first phase of the $2.1 billion project included mining through 2,900 feet to the 34th street station at Eleventh Avenue. The tunneling work is expected to be completed by Spring 2010, while the train extension project will be open for service in December 2013.
Mayor Bloomberg Speaks About 7 Train

During a speech at NYU, Mayor Bloomberg stated that in his third term he will see to it that the City will have better mass transit infrastructure, access to waterfront, and more parkland. He reaffirmed that the Number 7 subway train extension to the Far West Side will be completed.
Construction Moves Along for No. 7 Subway Extension

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chief Engineer, Joe Trainor, gave a positive report regarding the construction of the $2.2 billion No. 7 subway extension project. After the Port Authority gave the MTA 24-hour access to start digging a tunnel under the Port Authority Bus Terminal, contractors were able to finish what was estimated to be a two to three year dig within six months.
Mayor Announces Start of No. 7 Line Extension Tunneling

Mayor Bloomberg made a speech announcing the beginning of tunneling for the 1.5 mile No. 7 subway line expansion at 26th Street and 11th Avenue. The project is a key component of Bloomberg’s plan to create a far West Side district with office space, hotels, and residential development.
